Integrated Assessment of Artisanal and Small

This article is one of three synthesis reports resulting from an integrated assessment (IA) of artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in Ghana. Given the complexities that involve multiple drivers and diverse disciplines influencing ASGM, an IA framework was used to analyze economic, social, health, and environmental data and to co-develop evidence-based responses in collaboration with

2013-9-27Mining in Ghana predates independence and over the years the sector has grown to be a major driver of economic growth. Mining accounted for 6% of GDP in 2011 and the sector grew by 23.5% in 2012. There are currently about thirteen (13) large scale mining companies and 16 operations and over 1000 registered small- scale companies in the sector.
